The Topic & Standards

The topic is designed around the Maryland State Content Standard for the 7th grade health unit on nutrition and healthy eating. The unit includes lessons on nutrients, healthy eating habits, and eating plans from other cultures.

Maryland State Content Standards
6.7.A.14 Develop a personal healthy eating plan to meet recommended nutrient levels
  • 6.7.A.14.a.
Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate nutrient intake.
  • 6.7.A.14.b.
Create and present a personal healthy eating plan.
  • 6.7.A.14.c.
Compare healthy eating plans from other cultures.

The first lesson will provide students with the background knowledge needed to successfully complete assignments in the next two lessons. Throughout the lessons, students will be continually asked to think about and evaluate their own eating habits. Students will be presented with information about healthy foods and students will reflect on the choices they can make to improve their diet. Students will then take their knowledge about food and nutrition and learn about what foods another culture eats. Using their prior knowledge students will be able to assess the eating habits of this culture and compare it with the United States.

Standards for the 21st Century Learner - AASL
1.2.8 Demonstrate mastery of technology tools for accessing information and pursuing inquiry
2.1.5 - Collaborate with others to exchange ideas, develop new understandings, make decisions, and solve problems
2.3.1 - Connect understanding to the real world
3.1.4 - Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess
3.2.3- Demonstrate teamwork by working productively with others

The products the students create during and outside of class will address five standards from the American Association of school librarians’ Standards for the 21st-Century Learner. Students will use online resources to find nutrition information about foods they eat, and gather information for their cultural collage. Students will use technology tools such as Dipity to organize their personal food journals in a visual manner in order to help evaluate their own eating habits. Students will also use piZap and imagechef to display a food collage they created for their assigned country. Students will be able to understand the content by making connections to the real world through thinking about their own eating habits and learning about different foods. Students will work in informal groups during the first lesson to ensure all students can share their ideas and successfully understand the material. Students will work in small groups to create their collage, and each student must contribute to the final product. Working in teams helps students gain social skills, make decisions and solve conflicts. Groups that work collaboratively and productively are more likely to succeed.
